Abbotsford Eye Exams & Contact Lens Exams
Take an active role to ensure your eye health and book an eye exam at Universal Vision Optical in Abbotsford, BC.
Canadian optometrists recommend that everyone have a professional eye exam at least once a year. Universal Vision Optical has brand name and affordable fashion eyewear for every member of your family, from pediatric eyeglasses to brand name eyeglass frames for teens, adults and seniors.
What Is A Vision Test vs. Eye Exam?
Vision Test – Many optical stores only offer a vision test (aka sight test) by an optician, who is not a doctor. They use computerized equipment to offer only a general eye assessment to determine the lens power required. A vision test does not provide an accurate eye assessment and an optician is not capable of conducting a comprehensive eye exam to detect eye diseases or determine the health of your eyes.
Eye Health Exam – At our Abbotsford optical store and clinic, our optometrist (Doctor of Optometry) will conduct a comprehensive eye exam to accurately assess your eye health, and then provide a full assessment and diagnosis with recommendations to address any vision problems. The best defense against eye disease (and vision loss) is early detection, since many ocular problems will have little or no early symptoms. In fact, certain serious eye diseases don’t have any obvious symptoms until it’s too late, when the advanced condition may be more difficult to treat effectively.
We all experience some vision loss at some point in our lives so for your eye health (and your family’s eye health), have a comprehensive eye exam done annually.
Eye Exams Detect Diseases
A registered optometrist (or ophthalmologist) will not only help correct your vision with prescription glasses or contact lenses, but also accurately examine, diagnose, and treat any eye disorders and eye diseases that may be affecting any part of your visual system.
Early disease detection is crucial to the longevity of your eye health but also can play an essential role in the early detection of other health related issues like diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, and cancer.
At Universal Vision Optical, we also help our eye patients with pre-operative and post-operative eye care for other procedures like:
- Refractive laser surgery (LASIK, PRK)
- Cosmetic lid surgery (blepharoplasty)
- Corneal Crosslinking (for Keratoconic patients)
- And Cataract Surgery
What Is A Comprehensive Eye Exam?
During a comprehensive eye exam, our Abbotsford optometrist will first review your eye health history and then conduct a complete exam of your eyes, externally and internally, to assess the following:
- Condition of your Eyesight and Pupils
- Eyelid and Cornea Health
- Internal Eye Pressure
- Peripheral Vision
- Eye Muscles and Eye Movement (how well your eyes work together and focus)
- Retinal and optic nerve health
What Is An External Eye Exam? – If you use contact lenses then an external eye exam is necessary to ensure a proper fit but it can also often detect things with more subtle symptoms like early corneal disease, blepharitis, ocular rosacea/allergies, and dry eye issues. The optometrist will look at the exterior of your eyes including the eye cornea, tear ducts, glands, eyelids, lashes, etc.
What Is An Internal Eye Exam? – During an internal eye exam, our Abbotsford optometrist will thoroughly examine and assess the internal structures of your eyes including the eye lens, the retina, optic nerves, and veins and arteries to determine any diseases or abnormalities like cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachments, macular degeneration, etc.
